Director Ruben Altamirano, Leader and Mentor

My long friendship with Mike started 20 years ago at the Working Boys Center (WBC). I
proudly learned a lot from him. I wanted to be a Jesuit priest, and I was there at the Center
because the Jesuits sent me as a professor to get close to a different reality from mine. In fact, I
had the opportunity to study in one of the finest high schools in my country. My economic
situation was not that good, but my mother, with a lot of bravery and work, managed to send
me to that high school.

Things have changed now. I did not become a priest; I have a
wonderful son; I am an automotive mechanical engineer and an occupational safety consultant. Nowadays, above all, it is my honor to be part of this community of David’s Fund.
The reality that I found at the WBC was very painful to see, but somehow very hopeful at the
same time. I certainly discovered not only a lot of talent there, but maybe the most wonderful
souls surrounded by all the challenges and difficulties that come with poverty. Their
unbelievable courage, intelligence, and power to give unlimited affection made me fall in love
with them.

David’s Educational Opportunity Fund allowed me to meet some of my beloved students again
and find amazing new ones. One of the things that I used to wonder about years ago, when I
met these talented guys, was what would happen if they had the resources to give themselves
the opportunities that life had denied them at first. And now, I can see it every day: a
collection of top professionals and students who are changing their lives and their families’ lives
now and forever.
